Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the previous conception serves as a prognostic factor in in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). During the interval from January, 1992 to December. 1992, 378 cycles of IVF-ET in 272
patients with tubal factor infertility were reviewed. The outcomes of IVF-ET were analyzed according to the parity of patients.
The number of oocytes retrieved (11.8¡¾6.4vs11.6¡¾7.2), the number of embryos trasferred(4.8¡¾2.1 vs 4.9¡¾2.3), and the fertilization rates(50.8% vs 53.1) were not significantly different between primary and secondary infertility patients. The
pregnancy
rate per ET was 28.9% in primary infertility patients and 38.7% in secondary infertility patients, and there was no significant difference. Moreover, in secondary infertility patients, the pregnancy rates were not significantly different between
the
patients whose previous pregnancy was ectopic only and those who had the history of intrauterine pregnancy (30.6% vs 38.4%).
Our results suggest that the previous pregnancy may not affect the outcome of IVF-ET.
